Somalia's dollarized novelty issues of the early 2000s were produced under licensing arrangements with foreign minting houses — Somalia itself had no functioning central bank at the time, making these coins legal tender in name only, issued purely for the collector market. The Gibson Explorer, introduced in 1958, was initially a commercial failure so severe that Gibson discontinued it within two years of launch.
