The surname GRANT appears to the right of the portrait, with a small five-pointed star above it on the with-star variety; ULYSSES S. appears to the left, flanking the bust. The arc legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA curves along the upper periphery, while ONE DOLLAR arcs along the lower border. The centennial dates 1822 and 1922 are inscribed in the lower field on either side of the truncation, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of Grant's birth. |

The motto IN GOD WE TRUST arcs along the upper periphery between the tree crowns. The legend E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in the left field amid the tree trunks in a stacked arrangement. The composition evokes a pastoral, pastoral setting befitting a commemorative issue honoring the Union general and eighteenth President of the United States. |
