Singapore's bullion program launched in the early 1980s as the city-state positioned itself as a regional financial hub, and the Board of Commissioners of Currency issued these pieces during a period when gold investment products were proliferating across Southeast Asian markets. The timing coincided with gold's post-1980 price correction, when spot had fallen sharply from its January 1980 peak of $850 per troy ounce.
KM#28 spans two calendar years of issue, 1983 and 1984, with the BCCS retaining monetary authority over coinage until the Monetary Authority of Singapore absorbed those functions in 2002.
