Congress authorized this coin under the Girl Scouts of the USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act of 2011, timed to the organization's hundredth anniversary. The Girl Scouts were founded by Juliette Gordon Low in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912, with an initial troop of just eighteen girls. Surcharges from sales — $10 per proof, $9 per uncirculated — went directly to the Girl Scouts of the USA to support programming.
Mintage was capped at 350,000 across both versions. Final sales fell well short of that ceiling.
