The Straits Settlements dollar was pegged to sterling at 2s 4d from 1906, a rate that held through this entire series and survived the Great Depression years during which these notes circulated. That peg made the colony unusually stable by regional standards, though it also meant London monetary policy dictated local liquidity regardless of conditions on the ground in Penang, Malacca, or Singapore.
Bradbury Wilkinson produced P#16 at their New Malden works, where security printing had been consolidated since the late nineteenth century. The series ran across five years with relatively modest print runs compared to postwar successor issues, and surviving examples in the higher circulated grades are appreciably scarcer than the catalog frequency suggests.
