| Beschrijving voorzijde | A topless mermaid figure is depicted in the central field, positioned before a sailing ship in the background, holding a shell in her right hand. The design evokes the maritime and mythological iconography characteristic of Palauan commemorative coinage of the period. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF PALAU' arcs along the upper periphery, with the date '1994' and the denomination '1 $' inscribed in the lower field. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Palau only gained the authority to issue its own coinage in 1994 following a Compact of Free Association arrangement with the United States, making this platinum essai one of the earliest numismatic pieces struck under Palauan authority. Essais of this type were produced in extremely limited quantities as presentation or test strikes, typically for submission to monetary authorities or for collector distribution, and were never intended for circulation.
The choice of platinum at .999 fineness for a first-year essai is unusual and suggests the series was positioned aggressively toward the high-end collector market from the outset.
