Liberia's early 2000s "European Currency" series was a nakedly commercial operation — large-format, silver-plated novelty pieces produced for the collector market with no meaningful connection to Liberian monetary history. Portugal's escudo, the currency depicted in this series, had already ceased to be legal tender by the time this coin was struck, replaced by the euro on January 1, 2002.
