Liberia ran an extended series of these large-format commemorative dollars through the late 1990s and early 2000s, contracting production primarily to the Bavarian State Mint and several private minting houses in the Pacific trade coin market. The European Currency issues capitalized on eurozone conversion fever — Italy adopted the euro on January 1, 2002, retiring the lira after roughly 1,200 years of continuous use in one form or another.
These pieces have no legal tender relevance in Liberia and were never intended for circulation anywhere. The silver plating over copper keeps production costs low enough for souvenir pricing, and surviving examples almost universally appear in the original capsule or presentation packaging.
