Niue has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing agreements since the 1990s, effectively functioning as a mint-for-hire jurisdiction whose coins are legal tender in name but never circulate on the island. The 2007 Lunar series piece was produced for the collector market ahead of the Chinese New Year, timed to the Year of the Pig — the final animal in the twelve-year cycle.
