Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has made it one of the more prolific issuers of legal-tender commemorative silver in the Pacific, though its GDP would not sustain a mint of its own. The Lunar series coins issued under this arrangement are sold almost exclusively to collectors; none circulate on the island.
The Monkey is the ninth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle. 2016 marked the Year of the Fire Monkey, a combination that recurs only every sixty years.
