Between the rearing horses, at centre, a gilt horseshoe is depicted as a symbol of good fortune. Above the horses, the Chinese characters 馬年 (Year of the Horse) are incused in the field, and the curved inscription YEAR OF THE HORSE arcs along the upper border in a stylised script.
