Issued as part of Bermuda's WWF conservation series, this coin marks a specific ecological concern: the Bermuda rock skink (Plestiodon longirostris) had by the late 1990s been reduced to a handful of offshore islets after predation by rats and cats eliminated mainland populations. The WWF partnership coins of this period were struck under licensing agreements that directed a portion of proceeds toward field programs — in this case, ongoing surveys of the remaining skink colonies on Castle Harbour islands.
