William Kidd was hanged at Execution Dock, Wapping, in 1701 — his body left in an iron gibbet over the Thames for three tides as a warning to sailors. The trial was politically motivated; Kidd had been backed by Whig lords who abandoned him when the winds shifted, and evidence now suggests he was more privateer than pirate by any strict legal reading. This coin is part of the Perth Mint's "Pirates of the Seven Seas" bullion series, issued at a moment when the collector market for themed silver rounds was expanding rapidly into narrative territory previously dominated by commemorative programs.
