Obverse lettering ELIZABETH II 1 DOLLAR mw NIUE ISLAND 2010
Reverse description The reverse presents a full-color applied scene from the celebrated Soviet animated series Nu, Pogodi!, depicting the Wolf dressed in a sailor's striped shirt and peaked cap grasping the arm of the smaller Hare, who wears a green shirt and shorts. The characters are rendered in vivid polychrome enamel against a dark background, with a diagonal film strip motif in the silver field behind them suggesting a cinematic context, and faint outline drawings of the characters are visible in the field flanking the strip. The Cyrillic inscription НУ, ПОГОДИ! is boldly lettered across the upper portion of the field in a hand-drawn cartoon style, serving as the title legend of the series.

Additional information

Niue has operated a prolific licensed character coin program since the 1990s, issuing legal tender struck at the New Zealand Mint on behalf of a sovereign with no meaningful connection to the depicted subjects. "Well, Just You Wait!" — Nu, pogodi! in Russian — is the Soviet animated series that ran from 1969 through the 1980s on Gostelradio, essentially the USSR's answer to Tom and Jerry, with a wolf perpetually failing to catch a hare.

The series was one of the most-watched programs in Soviet television history, with individual episodes reaching audiences in the hundreds of millions across the Eastern Bloc.
