Niue's coin-issuing program has operated almost entirely as a commercial venture for foreign distributors since the 1970s — the island's actual circulating currency is the New Zealand dollar, and these silver pieces are produced exclusively for the collector market. This "Virgo" dollar is one of twelve in a zodiac series licensed through a third-party minting arrangement, a business model that generates royalty income for Niue while the coins themselves are struck and distributed with no meaningful connection to the territory.
