Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse of this rectangular proof silver coin presents a combined composition integrating an uncolored relief effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, rendered in the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait style, positioned at the lower left. To the right and occupying the majority of the field is a full-color reproduction of Vincent van Gogh's celebrated painting 'The Starry Night' (1889), featuring swirling nocturnal skies, a towering cypress tree, and a luminous village below. Three inlaid zircon gemstones are embedded within the colored panel, representing celestial bodies in the night sky. The denomination '1 DOLLAR' appears in the upper left field, the year '2007' below the effigy, and the legends 'ELIZABETH II' and 'NIUE ISLAND' are inscribed along the lower margin in raised relief.

Aanvullende informatie

Niue has issued commemorative coins under licensing agreements since the early 1990s, leveraging its status as a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand to access the global collector market. This van Gogh piece appeared in 2007, the same year a broader wave of art-themed rectangular silver issues flooded the numismatic market — the rectangular format with inset stones was a format Pobjoy Mint and similar producers were pushing aggressively through Pacific island issuers at the time.

The three zircons are set to correspond with specific elements of a particular painting, though secondary market listings rarely agree on which work is referenced.
