The USS Missouri (BB-63) is best known as the site of Japan's formal surrender on September 2, 1945, making her deck the precise geographic point where World War II ended in the Pacific. She was subsequently decommissioned, recommissioned for Korea and again for the 1980s Reagan-era naval buildup, and finally retired in 1992. Tuvalu's numismatic program, administered through the Perth Mint, has issued dozens of commemorative dollars using this format to generate government revenue — the island nation's land area barely exceeds 26 square kilometers.
