Cook Islands has issued commemorative dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1970s, functioning essentially as a vehicle for third-party minting programs with no expectation of domestic circulation. This Titanic piece fits squarely in that commercial tradition — the wreck has been a fixture of the commemorative coin market since at least the 1990s, with dozens of issuers returning to it repeatedly.
The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, roughly 370 miles southeast of Newfoundland, after striking an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. the previous evening. At 50 grams in copper, production cost on this piece is low relative to its likely retail price.
