Reverse description Full-color reproduction of a detail from Sandro Botticelli's 'The Mystic Nativity' (c. 1500-1501), depicting two angelic figures in flight above a landscape of dark trees against a blue sky. One angel is robed in white with large wings outspread, the other in a warm reddish-orange garment. The image is faithfully rendered in vivid color on the rectangular silver planchet, constituting the fourth panel in a fifteen-part series reproducing the complete painting.

Additional information

One of fifteen pieces in a series reproducing Sandro Botticelli's Mystic Nativity (c. 1500–1501), the only painting Botticelli ever signed. He inscribed it with a Greek text linking the scene to the Apocalypse of St. John and the tribulations of Florence under Savonarola — an unusually charged personal statement from a painter better known for secular mythologies. The work was likely never publicly displayed during his lifetime.
