| Additional information |
One of fifteen pieces in a series reproducing Sandro Botticelli's Mystic Nativity (c. 1500–1501), the only painting Botticelli ever signed. He inscribed it with a Greek text linking the scene to the Apocalypse of St. John and the tribulations of Florence under Savonarola — an unusually charged personal statement from a painter better known for secular mythologies. The work was likely never publicly displayed during his lifetime.
