Part of a fifteen-piece series issued by Niue through the New Zealand Mint, this coin reproduces Botticelli's Mystic Nativity (c. 1500–1501), one of the few paintings the Florentine artist signed — inscribed in Greek along the top with an apocalyptic reference to the "troubles of Italy" under Savonarola's influence. The painting itself never circulated publicly in Botticelli's lifetime and was largely forgotten until rediscovered in the 19th century.
