The Flying Dutchman legend, originating in Dutch maritime folklore and likely hardened into its modern form during the height of VOC-era Cape of Good Hope passages, was a story sailors told about a ghost ship doomed to sail forever after its captain swore a blasphemous oath in a storm off the Cape.
