Cook Islands has issued commemorative dollars under its own authority since 1972, though New Zealand retains responsibility for its defense and foreign affairs — an arrangement that has never prevented Hamilton from licensing some of the most aggressively marketed collectible coinage in the Pacific. This piece belongs to a wave of gold-plated copper issues produced in the early 2010s largely for the European collector market, manufactured by contract mints rather than any facility on the islands themselves.
