Issued under Cook Islands' long-running commemorative licensing program, which has produced hundreds of gold-plated copper pieces aimed squarely at the thematic collector market rather than numismatic circulation. "The Band Played On" refers to the Titanic's orchestra, whose members continued playing as the ship sank in April 1912 — the centenary of which this coin marks. All eight musicians perished. None were ever formally employed by White Star Line; they were contracted through an agency and received no survivor benefits.
