This piece references the sixpence placed in Princess Elizabeth's wedding shoe during her 1947 marriage to Prince Philip — a coin borrowed from the bride's mother, Queen Elizabeth, and reportedly a Scottish shilling rather than a true sixpence, though the romantic version of the story has long prevailed. The "pattern" designation here is somewhat liberal marketing language; this is a commemorative struck by a private mint under Cook Islands licensing, a common arrangement for the Pacific island series throughout the 2000s.
