Szombathely — known in antiquity as Savaria — was one of the most significant Roman settlements in Pannonia, founded around 43 AD under Claudius and later serving as the capital of Pannonia Prima. The amber route connecting the Baltic coast to the Adriatic passed directly through it, making Savaria a commercial hub for one of the ancient world's most valuable luxury commodities. Constantine the Great was reportedly born there, though historians continue to dispute the claim.
This issue is part of Niue's broader amber route series, which traces the overland trading corridor through successive Roman provincial centers. Savaria's inclusion reflects its archaeological record — excavations have yielded amber deposits, Roman road infrastructure, and merchant quarter remains consistent with a major transit point.
