| Additional information |
Part of a long-running series commemorating the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, this miniature gold issue poses no particular numismatic puzzle — its interest lies almost entirely in the subject. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, crafted by the Athenian sculptor Pheidias around 435 BC, stood roughly 13 meters tall inside the Temple of Zeus and was reportedly so overwhelming that the general Aemilius Paullus wept upon seeing it. It was transported to Constantinople in late antiquity and destroyed by fire, probably in the 5th century AD.
