Reverse description The reverse features a detailed high-relief reproduction of the first United States postage stamp issued in 1847, rendered as a raised stamp vignette at centre. Within the stamp frame, a three-quarter facing portrait bust of Benjamin Franklin is depicted, surrounded by the inscriptions U.S. POST OFFICE and the denomination FIVE CENTS with the numeral 5 appearing at lower left and lower right of the vignette. The surrounding legend FIRST STAMPS U.S.A. curves along the left field, with B. FRANKLIN curving along the right field, and 1847 appearing prominently at the top of the coin. The face value $1 is inscribed at the base of the coin below the stamp design, with the Pobjoy Mint privy mark visible in the lower right area of the stamp frame.
