Obverse description Right-facing diademed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II occupies the central field, engraved after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials IRB appear below the truncation. The portrait is set within a stylised orbital composition of concentric arcs suggesting a satellite trajectory, with a flying saucer-type spacecraft depicted in high relief in the upper-left field. The Czech Mint privy mark appears at the upper right. The peripheral legend reads ELIZABETH II to the left and NIUE ISLAND 2022 to the right, with the denomination 1 DOLLAR at the base.

Additional information

Niue has operated as a prolific licensing vehicle for commemorative silver since the 1990s, contracting with the New Zealand Mint and others to produce collector pieces with little connection to the island's own history or economy. This Sputnik issue marks the 65th anniversary of the 1957 launch — the satellite completed its 1,440 orbits over 21 days before the transmitter batteries died, with the sphere itself reentering the atmosphere in January 1958.
