The "fractional" silver maple series occupies an odd corner of Canadian bullion coinage — pieces struck to legal tender face value but sold at a premium that ensures none will ever see a cash register. This 1/20 oz denomination was introduced partly to give entry-level bullion buyers a lower price point, and partly because the Royal Canadian Mint had watched private refiners successfully market small-format silver wafers for years without any royalty flowing to Ottawa.
The red maple leaf designation distinguishes this from the standard silver maple, which depicts the sugar maple.
