Tuvalu's legal tender collector coinage is produced entirely under contract by the Perth Mint, which has issued an enormous volume of themed silver dollars for the territory since the 1990s. This piece belongs to a series pairing figures from Norse mythology with creatures from other traditions — an editorial choice made by the mint's marketing division rather than reflecting any cultural connection between Tuvalu and either subject.

Sleipnir, Odin's eight-legged horse, is described in the Prose Edda as the offspring of Loki and the stallion Svaðilfari — a parentage that occupied Snorri Sturluson with some diplomatic effort in the 13th century.
