Virenium is a proprietary nickel-brass alloy developed by the Pobjoy Mint, which has struck coins for the British Virgin Islands under a long-running contract. Pobjoy holds the distinction of being one of the few remaining fully independent private mints in the United Kingdom, and the BVI's coinage program has long served as a vehicle for commemorative issues with limited genuine circulation function.
The Santa Maria association places this within the broader Columbus quincentenary commemorative tradition, though this 2022 issue arrives some three decades after that wave peaked.
