| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus's flagship, rendered in finely detailed high relief and sailing upon colorfully applied enameled seas. Behind the vessel, a large color-printed terrestrial globe with latitude and longitude graduation scale occupies the left and central field, evoking the age of exploration. A smaller companion vessel bearing a cross on its mainsail appears in the middle distance to the left. The legend SANTA MARIA curves along the right periphery, while the inscription 1oz 999 SILVER appears in the lower exergue. The Perth Mint's P mintmark is visible at the top of the coin. |

| Additional information |
The Santa María was Columbus's flagship on the 1492 voyage — though she never made the return trip, having run aground off the coast of Hispaniola on Christmas Day and been deliberately dismantled to build a small fort. This Perth Mint issue is part of a broader Famous Ships series that ran through the early 2010s, targeting the bullion and collector crossover market that the Perth Mint aggressively expanded during the silver boom of that period.
