Niue has operated a prolific bullion and commemorative program since the 1990s, licensing its name to foreign mints — primarily the New Zealand Mint — to produce coins with legal tender face values that bear no meaningful relationship to the island's actual economy. The "Ride of the Kings" issue belongs to a themed series drawing on Central European folk tradition, specifically the Moravian ritual in which a boy dressed in ceremonial costume is escorted on horseback through villages by masked riders.
The ritual was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011, four years before this coin appeared.
