Canada's 1982 dollar marks the centennial of Regina, Saskatchewan — incorporated as a town in 1882 and named by Princess Louise after her mother, Queen Victoria, using the Latin for "queen." The Royal Canadian Mint struck both a matte proof and a brilliant proof version that year, accounting for the dual Charlton references RC-812 and RC-813. Neither was intended for general circulation; both were issued exclusively through collector sets.
The .500 fine silver content reflects a compromise position the Mint had held since 1967, when rising silver prices first forced a reduction from the traditional .800 standard.
