The Solomon Islands has issued collectible dollar pieces under royal portrait authority since independence in 1978, but by the 2010s the program had expanded aggressively into the themed numismatic market, with pieces like this one produced almost entirely for collector sale rather than any circulation purpose. Black nickel plating combined with selective gold was a finishing technique that became widespread among Pacific island issuing authorities during this decade, largely because the low face value allowed international minting houses to contract production at scale with minimal currency risk to the issuer.
