The Queen Mother turned 100 on August 4, 2000, becoming the first member of the British royal family to reach that age while remaining a working public figure — she carried out over 100 engagements in her final years. The British Virgin Islands, like dozens of Commonwealth and associated territories, issued commemorative coinage for the occasion, a practice driven largely by the numismatic market rather than any domestic monetary need. These pieces were struck in substantial quantities for collector sale and saw essentially no circulation.
