Issued as part of a commemorative series marking the Queen Mother's 101st year, this piece was struck just months before her death in March 2002 at the age of 101. The pad-printing process — a technique borrowed from industrial ceramics and watch-dial manufacture — was still a novelty in coin production at the turn of the century, used here to apply color directly onto the silver field rather than through enamel inlay.
Cook Islands served as the issuing authority largely for licensing reasons; the series had no meaningful circulation there.
