Cook Islands has issued commemorative dollars under Elizabeth II's name in such volume since the 1970s that the series functions less as national coinage than as a wholesale novelty market. Diana's death anniversary issues have appeared at the 10th, 15th, and 20th milestones with notable regularity, each cycle producing multiple variants in different platings and finishes. The KM#2553 entry for this piece places it among dozens of near-identical commemoratives from the same mint year.
Diana died in Paris on 31 August 1997, making 2017 the correct 20th anniversary year.
