The London Lighthouse was founded in 1986 as one of the first dedicated support centers for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United Kingdom, at a moment when the disease carried severe social stigma and government response remained inadequate. Diana's association with the organization became one of the more photographed moments of her public life when she shook hands with patients without gloves in 1989 — a deliberate, visible rebuttal of the then-widespread fear that HIV could be transmitted through casual contact.
