Australia's Lunar Circle dollar series began appearing in circulation in 2020, embedding the twelve-year zodiac cycle into an everyday coin rather than a collector-only format. The 2023 Rabbit issue is among the last struck under the first Elizabeth II effigy commissioned from the Royal Australian Mint's post-decimal series — her death in September 2022 meant production planning for this coin straddled the reign, with the "6th Portrait" designation reflecting the final Jody Clark effigy approved for Australian coinage before the transition to Charles III.
