The Perth Mint's annual Lunar Series has run continuously since 1996, making the rabbit the second time through the twelve-year cycle for that format. The 2023 issue is also the first rabbit dollar to appear without a living monarch on the obverse — Elizabeth II died in September 2022, and the Royal Australian Mint and Perth Mint both continued using Jody Clark's sixth portrait through the remainder of the allocated coin programs rather than rush a Charles III effigy into production mid-cycle.
