The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, founded in 1932 as the Australian Broadcasting Commission, received its royal charter during a period of acute political anxiety about foreign media influence — particularly American radio programming flooding shortwave bands into the Pacific. This coin marks the ABC's ninetieth year, though the timing proved unexpectedly elegiac: Elizabeth II died in September 2022, making this one of the final Royal Australian Mint issues to carry her effigy under an active reign rather than as a posthumous portrait in the conventional sense.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, appears here on an Australian commemorative for the last time as a reigning monarch's likeness.
