New Zealand Post issues commemorative dollars under a licensing arrangement that sits outside the Reserve Bank's circulating coinage program — these are legal tender in name but designed for collectors from the outset, never intended to pass through a till. The Hairy Maclary series draws on Lynley Dodd's 1983 picture book, a genuine fixture of New Zealand childhood since its first print run through Mallinson Rendel.
This piece carries the fourth and final portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, used on Commonwealth coinage from 1998 until her death in September 2022.
