Niue has long licensed its sovereign coinage authority to private minting operations — primarily the Pobjoy Mint — producing a sprawling catalog of pop-culture issues that function almost entirely as collectibles rather than circulating currency. This Pikachu dollar was struck at the height of the first global Pokémon trading card and merchandise boom, which had peaked commercially around 1999–2000 and was already cooling by the time this piece reached collectors.
KM#138 is one of several Pokémon-themed Niue issues from this period, each with tightly controlled mintages aimed squarely at the crossover market between numismatists and franchise collectors.
