Niue has long operated as a prolific licensing hub for novelty coinage, selling its monetary authority to overseas minting programs with little connection to the island's roughly 1,500 inhabitants. This Pokémon-themed dollar is a product of that arrangement — a legal tender issue designed entirely for the collector and gift market, produced under license from Nintendo at the height of the franchise's global saturation in the early 2000s.
