Obverse description The obverse features the crowned coat of arms of Niue, a quartered shield surmounted by a royal crown, flanked on either side by sprigs of fern rendered in fine relief. The shield's quarterings display stars, a vessel, and other heraldic devices associated with Niue's national identity. The legend NIUE appears along the upper left arc of the field, and the date 2002 is inscribed along the upper right arc, both in raised Latin characters.

Additional information

Niue has long operated as a prolific licensing hub for novelty coinage, selling its monetary authority to overseas minting programs with little connection to the island's roughly 1,500 inhabitants. This Pokémon-themed dollar is a product of that arrangement — a legal tender issue designed entirely for the collector and gift market, produced under license from Nintendo at the height of the franchise's global saturation in the early 2000s.
