Operation Market Garden, launched in September 1944, was Montgomery's ambitious attempt to seize Rhine crossings through the Netherlands using the largest Allied airborne assault of the war. It failed primarily at Arnhem, where the British 1st Airborne Division held out for nine days against SS Panzer units before the surviving troops were evacuated — roughly 2,400 of the nearly 10,000 who had landed.
