The "Ô Canada" gift sets were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint as a retail product aimed squarely at the tourist and gift market — shrink-wrapped patriotism at a modest premium. The 2015 series coincided with the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences, which the Mint marked across several collector products that year. This dollar came packaged alongside the circulating denominations in a folder format designed for point-of-sale display at airports and attractions.
Three-ply brass-plated steel was adopted for the loonie in 1997, replacing the original aureate bronze-plated nickel to reduce production costs without sacrificing appearance.
