The MiG-15 changed the Korean War overnight. When it appeared over the Yalu River in November 1950, it outclassed every aircraft the United Nations had in theater, forcing the United States to rush the F-86 Sabre into combat deployment months ahead of schedule. The resulting duels over "MiG Alley" produced some of the first jet-versus-jet combat in history.
This piece belongs to Perth's Aviation series, which ran through the mid-2000s pairing gold-plated silver with subjects of genuine aeronautical significance. The MiG-15's Soviet-supplied Klimov VK-1 engine was itself a reverse-engineered development of the Rolls-Royce Nene — technology Britain sold Moscow in 1947, a decision that generated political controversy for years afterward.
